چکیده

In face-to-face conversation, the arrangement of bodies and the shared physical environment provides a rich set of resources for communication. People use the location and orientation of their gaze, heads, hands, and torsos, to help to define, amongst other things, when a conversation begins and ends, their levels of mutualengagement, their participant roles in the conversation (e.g. speaker, hearer, sideparticipant), the boundaries of each turn, and even the syntactic and semantic organization of constituents within each turn (e.g. Bavelas and Gerwing, 2007; Clark and Krych, 2004; Goodwin, 1979; Heath and Luff, 1993; Kendon, 1970; Murphy, 2005). We argue that people exploit the potential for arranging these different communicational resources in space in order to create integrated, physically manifest, conversational maps that we term interactional topologies. (Healey and Battersby, 2009; Healey and Peters, 2007). This is achieved through two things. First, the fact that different contributions and speech turns within the interaction can be indexed to distinct locations in space. Second, that the spatial arrangement of these locations can then be manipulated to represent changes in the relationship between the conversational contributions. Using excerpts from a detailed ethnographic study of architects collaborative design interactions we describe how the architects use their bodies, pens, gestures, pieces of paper and inscriptions of different kinds, to create and elaborate a series of temporary gestural maquettes.

Architects and Engineers Differences: A comparison between problem solving performances of architects and engineers in the ideation phase of an analogy-based design

This study examines how analogy affects problem-solving in ideation phase of design among architects and engineers. For this purpose, a design problem was given to master and Ph.D. students of engineering and architecture. They were given two optional analogy sources to choose and be inspired by one. From the analysis of design sessions, using different coding groups and the application of the ...

A Review on the Extent of Urban Design Intervention in Iran’s Architectural Structures for Interaction with Architectural Innovation

The intervention of urban design in Irans architectural structures has been for many years a challenging issue for architects and urban designers over their professional realm. The preservation of architectural structures in Iran has always resorted to extremes. This control and direction has sometimes resulted in exclusion of architecture position and has sometimes, once faced with lack of pro...

Addressing the Dilema Between Collaboration and Privacy in Coworking Spaces

This paper aims to inform design strategies for regulating privacy in coworking spaces. Coworking spaces are growing at a high rate, yet studies related to the social, psychological, behavioral and physical needs associated with these environments are limited. The growth of coworking spaces is in greater part facilitated by a drive towards greater interaction and collaboration among the workfor...

The Effect of Designing Urban Public Spaces on Place Attachment (Case study: Tabriz, Iran)

Today, a major range of studies in architecture and urban design have been devoted to concepts such as place attachment, place identity, and etc. In all these studies, human-human interaction, human-place interaction and the impact of place on people are fundamental subjects of analysis. Place attachment is closely related to satisfaction, emotional characteristics, physical characteristics, at...

Spoken Dialogue Management Using Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning and Dialogue Simulation

Speech-based human-computer interaction faces several difficult challenges in order to be more widely accepted. One of the challenges in spoken dialogue management is to control the dialogue flow (dialogue strategy) in an efficient and natural way. Dialogue strategies designed by humans are prone to errors, labour-intensive and non-portable, making automatic design an attractive alternative. Pr...
